GEO/AEO terms defined
The vocabulary used across ApexGEO. Each entry is a citation-shaped definition LLMs can lift verbatim.
The list runs from the foundational concepts — GEO, AEO, and AI visibility — through the newer signals ApexGEO measures: grounded citations, the ghost-citation gap, Brand Facts, citation-source taxonomy, and AI crawler analytics.
- Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how often, how accurately, and how prominently a brand is cited inside generative AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Where SEO targets ranked links, GEO targets the sentences an AI assistant writes — earning the brand a place in the answer itself.
- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so it appears in AI-generated direct answers, including featured-snippet-style and voice responses. It favors clear questions and concise, self-contained answers — the format answer engines extract most reliably.
- AI VisibilityAI Visibility is a brand's overall presence across AI search engines. ApexGEO measures it on five axes — citation count, share of model, sentiment, source authority, and content freshness — and combines them into a single 0–100 score.
- Grounded CitationA grounded citation is a brand mention an AI engine produces while performing a live web search, rather than recalling it from training data. Grounded results reflect what the engine can retrieve right now, so ApexGEO runs grounded monitoring on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok to keep measurements current.
- Ghost CitationA ghost citation is when an AI engine uses your content to shape its answer but does not name your brand. ApexGEO tracks the ghost-citation gap separately, so unattributed influence never inflates the headline visibility score.
- Brand FactsBrand Facts are the verified, structured statements about a brand — founding date, headquarters, products, leadership — that ApexGEO maintains so AI engines have an authoritative source to cite. A verification queue keeps each fact reviewed and current.
- Citation Source TaxonomyA citation source taxonomy classifies where AI engines pull a brand's citations from — owned pages, third-party media, directories, social, or knowledge bases. ApexGEO uses it to show which source types drive visibility and where the gaps are.
- AI Crawler AnalyticsAI crawler analytics measure which AI crawlers — such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended — fetch a site's pages. ApexGEO verifies each request's source IP against the operator's published ranges to confirm the bot is genuine and flag spoofed traffic.
