Ghost Citation

When an AI engine uses your content to shape its answer — but never names your brand.

Definition

A ghost citation occurs when an AI engine draws on a brand's content to construct an answer — the framing, the data, sometimes near-verbatim phrasing — without naming or linking the brand. The work of earning the engine's trust happened; the attribution that makes it commercially useful did not.

Ghost citations are the dark matter of AI visibility: invisible in any metric that only counts named mentions, yet a large share of how engines actually use the open web.

Why it distorts measurement

There are two dishonest ways to handle ghost citations, and both are common. Counting them as visibility inflates the score — the buyer reading the answer never saw your name. Ignoring them entirely hides a real, fixable problem. The honest treatment is a separate metric: a named-citation score that stays strict, plus a ghost-citation gap showing how much influence goes unattributed.

  • Gap widening — engines read your content but name competitors: an entity-clarity problem
  • Gap narrowing — attribution catching up with influence: the desired direction
  • No influence at all — a different problem entirely: the engines are not reading you (check AI crawler analytics)

Frequently asked questions

What is a ghost citation?
A ghost citation is when an AI engine draws on your content to construct its answer — your framing, your data, sometimes near-verbatim phrasing — but does not name or link your brand. The influence is real; the attribution is missing.
How is a ghost citation different from a grounded citation?
A grounded citation names the brand from a page the engine retrieved live. A ghost citation is the inverse failure: the content was used, the name was dropped. A page can be heavily read by AI crawlers and still earn mostly ghost citations.
Why track ghost citations separately?
Because folding unattributed influence into a headline visibility score would inflate it. ApexGEO tracks the ghost-citation gap as its own metric, so the visibility score only counts answers where the brand is actually named — and the gap shows how much influence goes unattributed.
Can ghost citations be converted into named citations?
Often, yes. The usual causes are weak entity signals: content that is quotable but not attributable — missing Organization schema, unclear authorship, or brand names absent from the passages engines lift. Strengthening entity clarity gives the engine something to name.

Find your ghost-citation gap

ApexGEO measures named citations and unattributed influence as separate metrics, so you can see both the score and the gap. The methodology explains how each is recorded.
